I think how a car is driven may have more effect on sludging than anything else. A 2 mile daily commute that doesn't allow the oil to fully warm up is far worse on the car than a 30 mile commute, regardless of mileage. If the car is stored outside in cold/wet weather even moreso.
I have a 35 mile commute, pretty much only use the car for long trips, and change my (Mobil 1)oil every 10K. I haven't pulled the sump, but the car uses about 3/4 quart per 10k miles and always looks pretty clean when I drain it. Darker than new, yes, but clear. 2 cars/320k total miles like this with no internal problems.
YMMV.
