Weird - low battery, clicks, flashing lights ?

2003 9-5, 6-cylinder.
Wife had left the key in, but 'off' for about half an hour with radio and everything else off (but headlight switch turned to on). When she left the car, the doors wouldn't lock.
Later, when we all were ready to drive away, the car would not start or turn over, just some clicking sounds. Later when trying again, the interior lights flashed slowly, and then there was a clicking sound coming from the engine bay which I tracked down to the horn relay (pulling it stopped the clicking which just would not stop).
I figured maybe it was something with the alarm?
I removed the battery, and took it to Auto Zone which said it had 50% charge left, which 'should start the car' so I didn't get a new battery.
We had already tried getting jumped once which didn't do a thing - not even turning over.
A nice couple offered to jump the battery again, and after leaving the two cars connected for maybe 10 minutes or so, our car finally turned over and started and was fine for the 40 minute drive home.
Jus tthought I'd post, in case others in the future have the same weird symptoms. Hopefully it was just the battery being drained too much!
