The ESP button turns off two things... Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Wed, 8 Dec 2010 19:02:30 In Reply to: Hmm, on the ESP, Dan-O, Wed, 8 Dec 2010 18:47:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
TCS (Traction Control System) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program).
TCS is what slows down the drive wheels when they're slipping and you're trying to accelerate. In some conditions, like going up your driveway, it's better to have it off.
ESP keeps your car going in its intended direction while it's in motion. It has a center of gravity sensor between the front seats, and an angle sensor on the steering column so it knows where you're trying to point the car. It can then apply the brakes to individual wheels to rotate the car back into its intended path. It's really cool. I've played with it on a snowy back road. Doing about 35 you can take the wheel and violently turn it back and forth. Without ESP I would surely spin out and hit a tree, but I can feel each wheel lock up and the car rotates back into control. It's gotten me out of a couple hairy situations. Without it I definitely would have gotten a little bit too intimate with a Volvo wagon last year. Yeah, I remember that "oh sh*t moment" pretty well. ;)
