Front timing cover leak - 22 hours? Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 13:44:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So I'm trying to sell my cool 2000 9-5 Aero with 115K and I'm fixing one of the 3 oil leaks. The first was a loose oil cap. Two was the oil pressure sender leaking on the exhaust. Makes it really hard to sell when it comes back from a test ride smelling of burning oil and making smoke.
So that leaves the front timing cover. Original quote was $3k, but I now find out that was because often removing the timing cover can find a worn timing chain or guides. 22 ours at $90 an hour is $1,980. If I was keeping it I'd postpone the fix as a spot or two in the street is fine by me on an 11 year old car and so far I've only had to add oil every 4,000 miles or so.
So I'm being honest about the "minor" leak to potential buyers, but not actually stating it's a $2,000 leak.
You know I musta' angered the gods because I just did the same repair on wifey's 1996 Z3, front timing cover, to the tune of $1,800 ish.
