I thought the belt didn't transfer torque but the Indy I dropped the car at said it did' so I thought `hmm..perhaps I am wrong and gave him the benefit of the doubt.
I was thinking when the bearing seizes with the metal wheel it would smoke the serp. belt as it slides over the top of the pulley and all that would happen is the belt would be destroyed. I`ll start looking for a timing cover now and have it on hand when it happens. This incident with the plastic wheel was uncalled for. I had just slowed down to pay a toll on the turnpike and after punching it to get the car back to 80 the plastic wheel broke. I have the bearing in hand & nothing is wrong with it. The Indy worked on that side of the motor recently to cure the oil leak that happens between the block and head, maybe something happened like dropped a mini sludge, or used a pry-bar to gain a little more room and accidentally hit the wheel cracking it.
I was surfing the archives looking of a similar incident and haven't found one, (the defected plastic wheel)so I`ll give GM the benefit of the doubt and run the plastic wheels but have the metal ones on hand if this happens again.
