GT-17: why is it "so fragile"? or is it?

I'm considering a 2004 *linear* wagon (confirmed by VIN)... ie Garrett turbo but hopefully all else decently sorted because it is 2004. It's somewhat higher mileage (140k), not necessarily a bad thing, but I want to weigh out the mech risk vs putting more in up front for a car with lower miles...
Does anyone have one of these? I know all about the 2004+ Arc (there's one in the family already), but 04+ linears seem uncommon...
My main question is, do we know why the GT-17 is so prone to failure? Or more accurately, why (some) 9-5's eat them so quickly? As I understand it, it is used on other cars, including the OG9-3, and doesn't seem problematic there... Is GT-17 failure usually correlated with sludge problems? The link below (I did a search) suggests that (aside from early models described in a TSB) it is a possibility... I've noted some correlation in posts from this board...
if that's the case, do the Garretts last better on the 2004's (with the better pcv system)? or are 2004 linears so uncommon that we have no idea?
James...

maybe this answers my question?
