Biggest issue is the PCV updates Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 09:37:19 In Reply to: Is there a list on common issue I can print out, Mysaab, Fri, 18 Mar 2011 05:05:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The oil fill tube should have a 1/2-inch diamer rubber hose connected to the side of the oil fil tube, and the other end should Tee into the hose connecting to the valve cover. The original 2002 factory system did not have this hose configuration.
The other big piece of advise is to have the sump dropped and oil pick-up screen inspected and cleaned. Having the latest PCV update and a clean oil pick-up screen are highly desirable. A dirty screen is a very bad sign; did you catch the problem in time, or has engine damage already been done?
The cars have a low oil pressure warning light but it does not illuminate until the oi pressure has dropped so low as to have already caused oil starvation of bearings.
There is also a vacuum operated by-pass valve on the heater circuit which fails causing coolant leaks. A new one of these costs $50 to $80 (depending on where you buy and whether they are having a sale) and should be replaced after buying any used model. This same valve was used on Cadillac Cateras with the same problem.
The cars also have a regular major maintenance due at 60K mile intervals. The work necessary is not daunting but time consuming. Paying a dealer to do this work will cost you nearly $1,000 whereas doing it yourself will cost you $200 and one full day of time. Some owners sell their cars rather than pay for this service on what they consider to be an older car. Include replacement of the top idler pulley for the serpentine accessory drive belt when doing this maintenance.
FWIW, I have 295K miles on my 2000 model and the car ahs been extremely reliable.
