For me a 6 dollar a tank savings is a reasonable reason for buying regular, particularly as that 6 dollars is buying me little more than limited thrills under my daily driving conditions. It's great to be able to buy a few more horsepower when I fill up, which you can't do with every car out there.
The *best* reason to buy a luxury car and not put luxury fuel in it? Because you can, safely. Reducing timing/boost to accomodate lower octane does not reduce efficiency, it actually improves efficiency for that particular octane. It does reduce performance and I certainly can feel the difference between my Aero on regular and my Aero on super, particularly when I pull a trailer.
At the end of the day, any octane gas you can buy at the pump has about the same energy content in each gallon. The only advantage of super is that it allows higher compression which allows you to burn *more* fuel in each combustion cycle, thereby making more power(and less gas mileage). Any change in energy efficiency is insignificant, assuming you compensate for the slower burning characteristics of low octane fuel by retarding timing, which our Saabs do well.
