Munroe shocks successfully installed—BUT!!

Please don't berate me guys but in these tough times...I had a friend of a friend who "works on cars" install my Monroe Sensatrac shocks (which I purchased at Advanced Auto Parts). I'm looking forward to meeting the folks at Conn-tech who you guys recommended but I thought shocks were straight forward enough so I opted to try to save a few bucks on this particular repair. So far I'm in for just $130 bucks and feeling pretty good, much less than the $330 and $500 estimates that I received from shops.
However SLIGHT complication...The friend 0' friend says I need another rubber cushy part which will make the ride smoother or something like that—to paraphrase. He didn't have it so he installed the shocks anyway and said he could put the cushy thingy in later. Anyone know what he was talking about? Does he know what he's talking about? Is it crucial? It's been so long since I had a smooth ride I'm not really sure what it would feel like. The ride does feel and sound much better. Would appreciate your advice!
Thanks!!
