I need to stop estimating numbers from eyeballing them! After posting, I went out and measured the situation in the 9-5 with 2 SK radians in there...
between the 2 seats: a little over 12" between them at the narrowest point (shoulder height). 3 forward facing would squeeze each of the outer seats out roughly 2" (vs the 1" I estimated).
between the seats + the door: looks like 8" looking down at the seats but really, due to the contours of the car seats + the contours of the doors, it is 7" max, 5" min with 2 car seats in there... would be down to 3" margin with 3 seats in there...
That said, the narrower margins are higher up whereas the greater margins are lower down. The pendulum B pillar swings impact under the seat, so greater deformation lower down, where there is more margin...
just wanted to update that so as not to mislead someone. 8" vs 5" vs 3" might make a big difference! All these numbers are with the SK Radian, which, to my knowledge, is the skinniest (good) 5 point car seat on the market. It would be much tougher (impossible?) to squeeze 3 Marathons in there!
