If with short time you mean a week or two you can drive without it until you have gotten a new one.
The risk of driving without one is that the pad can wear slightly off 90° to the rotor and so if you later on install the spring, it will pull the caliper back in place with the pad having a gap creating a soft brake pedal where takes up the slack every time you push the brake pedal.
