On my '03, it was the sender. Replaced fuel pump under warranty & that cured the flaky readings on the guage.
It's really fun when your Mom borrows the car and then calls you to say, "I don't understand your car. The needle says "E" and the light is on, but it would only hold 1 gallon of gas or Why didn't you tell me your car was empty..I was freaking out trying to find a gas station!" HaHa. Mom got Punk'd by my SAAB.
