Looks like on my original installation I pinched the small o-ring on the cooling hose and put a big cut in it. I did not have it lubed properly so it must've caught an edge when I tightened down the retaining bolt.
I searched around for the Hylomar HPF but couldn't find any at NAPA or other local autoparts stores. There seems to be a lot of (mis)information on the web about what this product is currently labeled, who offers it, and whether the current compound is 'as good' as the original. Anyway, I used the 3M silicone paste as Anders suggested. I gave all the connecting parts a good cleanup with scotchbrite and brake cleaner so they shone, and reassembled using a good coating of the silicone paste. So far, good with no leaks.
The second time around seemed to take about half the time as my original attempt, and the temperature dropped with a new weather front so it wasn't as miserable as the first go-around.
Thank you all for your help and encouragement!
