During the SOC 2011 at Parsippany, NJ I was there with a 2011 9-5 Turbo-4 providing test drives all day long on Friday and Saturday. On the drive to Parsippany from Cranbury, NJ the car was as smooth as silk on the Interstate at 70-75 MPH.
By early afternoon on Friday after a number of test drives the car had a lot of vibration and shimmying at 30-40 MPH. The cause was the parking lot at the Hilton. It had been repaired using a very soft patching material; it got stuck to the front tires in huge chunks.
I spent about 2 hours scraping it off. This helped a lot; it raised the point of vibration and shimmying to 60-70 MPH. This morning I put it into the shop with a recap of the problem and cause. They've seen it and agreed they would have to remove the wheels and scrape off the remaining tar/patching material and check the tire's balance.
If tar and road patching material are stuck to your tires removal of the material and re-balancing the tires will likely be necessary. Rebalancing alone will not fix the problem; lumps of tar will create and out-of-round condition in addition to an out-of-balance condition; both must be addressed. We've had some extremely hot weather this summer; so, this cause and effect may be more common.
