who knows when it will go. I'd definitely use jack stands if nothing else so part of the car doesn't get damaged while working on it. I agree about avoiding time under the car.
I have used scissor jacks lots of times to change tires (like you say, with no part of my body under the car + working quickly) - that's what they were designed for... light duty/emergency use... never had a problem or been concerned in that context (properly seated + on flat ground)... main problem is slow + inconvenient...
jack stands are pretty cheap and small, in comparison to a hydraulic jack... I wouldn't think of them as superfluous... fwiw, in most cases, I will put something redundant under the car in case a jack stand slips...
