If you've got the typical "Chrustmas Tree" scenario of lots of dash warning lights lit up, and maybe a wonky speedo display as well, it's much more likely that your ABS module needs to be rebuilt - a relatively cheap and painless affair. Research "ABS module" here and you'll see. Removing the module and replacing it after the rebuild is pretty simple.
The standard dealer "diagnosis" always points to a replacment of the ABS hydraulic unit, as you've been told, a very expensive repair - and usually not needed. If it were my 9-5, I'd send the ABS module out for repair, reinstall it and see what happens. Given the low cost (and lifetime guarantee) of the rebuilt ABS module, you've not nothing to lose.
