If you fill up with lower octane fuel, won't it adjust with that fuel, at that time? You typically won't experience knocking, it adjusts timing (and boost, I assume) immediately (more/less).
It would seem that after a few thousand ignitions, it should be able to assume that a higher octane fuel is available. Or are you implying that the ECU "errors" on the side of safety, and it requires several hundred thousand ignitions to assume higher octane? It certainly isn't stuck in lower-octane mode indefinitely?

I was reading a few-months old post of yours with the 3,000 beginning shift point, with 500 rpm increments. With the little caveat you just added, it appears that we're pretty much in agreement with engine break-in.
One thing that I have resisted with my new engine is just getting on the interstate and racking up 200-mile days just to hit 1,200/1,500 miles (well, I also haven't had the free time). I've been mostly city driving, so the rpm's are well varied, resulting in a better broken-in engine. I'd also like to think that this compresses a little the 1,200/1,500 mile break-in recommended by SAAB, although I'll probably still follow the owner's manual.
