I got a couple of sockets from Snap-On that have a hex on the outside as well as the inside. This allows you to put a hex key in the end of the shock rod and still turn the nut. A deep offset box wrench works well too if the shock rod has no internal hex. As a last resort you could use a Dremel tool with a cutting disc on it and cut the nut at a 45° angle. Be very careful and stop just shy of the thread crests on the shock rod. Then you can take a chisel or big screwdriver and open up the cut you made. That will release the threads on the nut and it will come off easily. I've used that trick several times on front McPherson strut tubes that have a big external nut that retains a shock insert.
