I think that most of the voodoo about this is from lawyers, not engineers.
That nut keeps the piston shaft connected to the rubber mount. It does not carry any of the loads from the spring, the vehicle weight does that. If the tire ends up in the air, the force of the spring is then resisted by the piston shaft and nut. When the strut bottoms out, that force does not go through the piston shaft. In normal operation, the only forces on that shaft and nut are from damping. When the strut is not moving, that force is zero.
If the nut started to back off that would rattle a lot and there is a lot of thread there as a safety margin.
I have never replaced struts and not gotten a new shaft nut with the new strut. But I have never fitted a replacement strut that was not Bilstein or Koni.
You can try loosing that nut while the strut is still in the vehicle and tires on the ground. You can remove the cover plate, run the screws back in and go at it. This can be easier than trying to get it broken free by wrestling with it on the garage floor. The vehicle is taking the spring load. When you remove the strut, the shaft and nut are taking the load. You can back that nut off most of the way. But you might not want too as you will then have a lot more work to do with the spring compressor as the spring will be extended more.
