I did my rear shocks & new OEM springs this weekend. Bilstein HD's. The rear ride height came up about 5mm per side. I'm still 1.5 cm below spec but I'll just live with it and rotate my tires every 3,500 miles.
The height of the old and new springs were within a few millimeters of each other.
I love the damping from the Bilsteins. I've had them on BMWs before and loved 'em. The car feels more planted on rough surfaces. It was not a bad DIY job. The key to doing the upper nut on the strut is to wire wheel the exposed threads with a stiff wire wheel brush on a strong drill. After that - chase the 10 mm x 1.5 threads with a die and then soak with penetrant. I coated the threads on the new struts with battery post paint and put a tight fitting plastic cap over them to keep salt and crud out of the 5mm internal hex.
