The sludge probably happens due to the combination of a bunch of factors (eg cat under the oil pan), but it seems more common on cars where the PCV system is not working as well.
I doubt having PCV#6 is a panacea, but it does seem that cars with it have better vacuum readings, and the same as the 2004+ 9-5 with the different good PCV system from the factory... see Anders' excellent post in the link below.
