Yes, you're right: one is entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts.

Kias have a reputation for breaking timing belts around 60K. Unfortnately it's an interference engine design and a broken belt means expensive noises from the engine room.

Worse, Kia also has a rep for not honoring the warranty if the belt is not replaced at 60K where it is a specified service item. But from what I've read about them, coverage may be denied even if a belt dies at 60,500 and you haven't been in for the 60K service. Not cool at all. Simple to fix, just specify that the belt should be done at 50K.

That said, my now defunct Saab dealer refused to replace the serp belt on our '03 9-5 at the 60K service, saying it was OK. Repeated this at 65K and 70K. I finally had my indy do it.

One of my indies has a string of stories about customers with Kias not having warranty work honored. It's not that the cars are bad, it's just that the company seems to treat customers pretty poorly. At least from what he's been told, being even a little late for a service is enough for Kia to deny a warranty coverage claim. And who isn't late for an oil change or minor service every so often?

So the word to Ian and his Optima is, get your service done early or on time!
