Hello all, looking for some general pointers on the saab 9-5/possibly 9-3.
First a bit about me. Been a saab guy for about 20 years, with one 99 and about 5 OG 900's my most recent a 1993 convertible got sandwiched at speed on the highway. So sad, but at least walked away which was nice. Not afraid of a little engine work ( have done my fair share of tranny swaps, head gaskets , etc..). Always been a huge critic of the GM saabs, but have to admit they aren't bad cars overall (turbo, mileage, ability to get a 5spd, and right now very inexpensive) Also parts etc for the old 900's are becoming a big hassle - especially when I now drive about 100 miles a day. So I've been looking at 2000-2002 9-5's (both wagons and sedans) with 100-150k mileage that end up somewhere between 2-4k. Manual highly preferable, but for the right price entertaining an auto.

So my questions:

What are the major maintenance jobs to look at/for in these cars and mileage wise when should these have been completed and what is the longevity of the replacements? :
perusing the board it seems there is a timing (chain/belt?)issue?
Also some sort of issue with serpentine belt and pulleys?
What is the deal with the oil sludge- is there a good/quick way to check for this on a potential buy?
Any issues with either type of transmission?
As far as I understand for reliability the 2.3 4 is preferable to the 6?
Those are the issues ive seen pop up on the board a bit, and any i miss would be appreciated.

Unrelated to the car itself, but probably common to 9-3/9-5 : how is availability of parts. Are there dealers/supply houses that still have them for this age vehicle. For my 900's there's many saab specific parts that are literally ungettable. Is everything through independents, and do any of the older saab dealers still exist to service/sell parts. Ok thanks a lot and I look forward to any responses

Rick
