There are many notes in this board that answer this question, but based on 100K miles in an 03 Aero and talking with several dealer mechanics and indies over the past 9 years -- the 9-5 is a great used car bargain. In general people think the 2002 and later is the best, but any 9-5 can be good.
Check for sludge if the car had by-the-book oil changes, which are not frequent enough. See if it's had the PCV 6 upgrade. If it hasn't, do it.
Serp belt replacement is important. Coolant bypass valve is worth doing. Motor mounts aren't that expensive and make a good difference.
The heater blend door arm can go. Now there;s a reasonable fix for that, but at higher milages you'll have to do it. Mine is making noises and is about to go.
Are you in or near Mass? Wayland Automotive (used Saab specialist I drive past often) has a nice 2001 Aero wagon with 86K on it. Needs an exhaust but otherwise looks good for less than $8,000. Good, honest dealer too. Four-speed auto, but that's ok.
