The real advantage of a performance tire is steering response and traction. This makes the vehicle handle better, the most important aspect is shorter stopping distances and better accident avoidance. You can consider this a safely issue.
The negatives are cost, wear rates and harsh road manners.
I have used a number of different high-->extreme performance tires and have found that they do not wear properly, getting noisy and need to be replaced well before they wear out. So I decided to move to lesser cost tires.
I now have 225/45R-17 Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 XL tires. They handle very well and have a smooth ride. The performance tests at TireRack are up with the best of the performance tires and the owner reviews are very good. I got those tires for $109 each and a rebate on top of that.
I combined these with Koni FSD on four corners. My Aero wagon is now a pleasure to drive.
