When we bought our 9-5, it had dunlops (I think Signature Sport, or at least very similar) on the front + Pirelli p6 on the back. treadwear was not bad, maybe 5mm left? anyway, there was a section of highway where we were passing in the rain (maybe 65-70 mph) + I could feel the front letting go + had to back off. I took that to mean the P6's held better than the dunlops (good to have the back hold at least). granted, the car probably had a camber/toe issue at the time (as we ate all 4 tires wearing the inside edge), but the grip was surprisingly awful! I would never have had to do that in our c900 with Nokian NRH2s (with more wear)... never hydroplaned with those tires ever, even at higher speeds + worse conditions... not that I advocate driving beyond the conditions, but, in this case, the conditions weren't that bad, and it is always good to have a cushion of performance for safety...
I'm looking at Nokian V for new tires this summer (because we were happy with the NRH2's on the older cars, which we bought as a gamble after liking their winter tires)... main problem is finding them... I'm not sure that they would suit Laurent's objectives of cost effectiveness, but they should be a good safe tire. Many have recommended the contis and I think that will be my #2 choice...
do you know why directionals don't work well on the 9-5? even in a car aligned with less negative camber than the factory spec (we're close to 0 if I understood my indy correctly)? (the NRH2's were directional)...
