Even though the experts disagree (keep in mind that they are bought by sales and service commitments and EPA regulations) I see that the first batch of transmission fluid is much darker when drained at 30K miles then the subsequent drains at 60K and 90K. Just like the first batch of brake fluid is much nastier after 3-4 years then the next one after that.
So on my grass root level of knowledge, I believe that cars are still shedding some wear in products or that the car makers are using a cheaper blend of fluids because they got a good price on it and it is a good idea to get that out of there if you are planning to keep the car for a long time.
Here is a simple chain of thought.
100K or 200K miles from now and if the transmission has failed. If you DIDN'T change the fluid, you might kick yourself when the shop tells you you could have saved $3-4K if you had spent a few $100.00 in trans fluid now and then.
If you DID change the fluid and the transmission fails, you at least know you did the best you could and are only out a few hundreds extra of dollars in fluid. This of course if you took it to a shop where they did use the proper fluid and filled it up to proper levels. If you did it yourself, you are only yourself to blame if you did it incorrectly.
