Please indicate what your objective is. Comfortable compliant ride? Firm road feel and steering response? Best of both worlds? What is the expectation from your wife?
Tires make a big difference. Performance tires can be harsh as well as expensive. 16" tires have a softer ride than 17"
When you remove the struts, you will be using a spring compressor to replace the strut/shock. At that point you can uncompress the spring and install a different one. So there really isn't an issue. New struts will come with any needed replacement hardware that is needed.
Firm springs and 16" touring tires might seem to be an odd combination.
Your shocks are shot. You will see when you have the new ones installed. Search for monroe on this forum and you will see past postings. Again, reviews need to be taken in the context of tire type and size.
