As I wrote in an e-mail to you.
Since your car has a late 04 VIN, it already have the short belt (ha, you wrote belt here but chain in the e-mail) from factory.
But the upper idler pulley must be replaced otherwise it is a waist of time to replace the belt since the belt lasts a long time but the upper idler pulley have a tendency to fail and that will ruin the new belt.
This is the problem using non Saab specialists but also as it sounds like, a shop that takes on jobs and don't really have the interest to go the extra step and see what it takes for each brand.
It sounds like to be one of these shops that "specialize" in foreign and domestic cars.
