The 2002 get's you ESP, 5-sp trans, more modern front end, some handling tweaks. Decontenting didn't start for another year or two.
Check for PCV #6, it would be great if you could find service record indicating that was done 7 years ago.
I don't know how you intend to check for sludge. Dropping the pan is the best way, and a MUST according to some on this BB, but I just don't see that happening in the car-buying process. Certainly the seller won't pay for it, would have to be buyer.
If you decide to open your wallet for that, you might also price inspecting the oil supply tube to the turbo. If it's clean, and still on original turbo, I say good enough.
You don't mention which model you're trading vs buying.
A service dealer should be able to pull up what service history was done at SAAB dealers.
