2006 9-5 Manual 63,000 miles
I have posted earlier regarding an intermitent start problem, cold or hot, I turn the key and either the starter runs for a fraction of a second and stops or the starter does not engage at all. Dash lights up and instruments come on, radio plays, but no crank from the starter. Happens with either key.
Pull and reinsert key and it may take several attempts with lights/guages working and no response from the starter, then all of a suddden, the next attempt starts the car as if nothing is wrong. Symptoms may not occur for the rest of the day, or for several days, and then it acts up again, not starting for maybe ten attempts before the starter cranks. When it cranks, it usually starts on the third turnover.
Last night on the way home from work, a new issue, possibly related. Sitting at a light, in neutral, the engine stumbled, revs dropped to about 500 for a few seconds and then the engine quit. Naturally, the no start issue occurs with each attempt to restart the car. Also naturally, an ambulance comes up to the intersection and can't get through quickly because everyone is trying to get around me. Then, with about the seventh turn of the key, it starts. Then it stalls out again(clutch pushed in waiting to advance) about a mile later, but fortunately started on the first attempt and I got it home. Using the other SAAB today.
So, crank position sensor? Probably not as the no start problem occurs when cold, a failing CPS usually gives symptoms of no start when hot, but works after a cool off, as far as I am aware. Correct me if I am wrong here.
Ignition casette? Probably no as the original failed several weeks ago (increasing misfires until I got home) and my unused spare is now on the car. The new casette had no effect on the no start issue.
Battery cable? Bad ground? Car is very clean and had all services, SAAB certified indy was told about the no start issue and he could not replicate the problem over the past three oil service visits. Battery is a Die Hard, new last year.
Starter? Bad or failing starter solinoid? I have about 375,000 miles on four SAABs since 1995 and never had a starter issue.
Ignition switch? Key has to be really twisted hard when the no start issue comes up so maybe it is failing. But would a flakey ignition switch cause a stall issue? No other electrical gremlins in the lights or accessories occur as usual with a bad ignition switch.
Before I start swapping out the CPS, battery cables and ignition switches, does anyone have some advice on this? I can live with the intermittent no start, but a stall issue has to be resolved. I don't know if it is throwing codes, I have to buy a code reader for that later today to find out.
Thanks in advance.
