Low coolant (or Fill coolant fluid) message

Hi all:
I've got a 2004, 9-5 wagon with about 68K on it (put about 3K on it this summer on a roadtrip through the midwest). This morning I got my first "low coolant/ fill coolant fluid" message. I obviously want to take care of this as quickly as possible but I also need to drive my car today (short trips - pick up kids at camp, etc.). Am I going to do damage to it if I keep driving it? I will admit I forgot to look to see if the temp needle was high or not but had planned to do so when I go back out.
I also noticed a bit of a strong smell - almost like something burning - when I stopped the car at home. Could I have a problem w/ a belt or something else? I love my car and do not want to do anything to harm it.
Plan to email my indy (the Saab experts, not the local ones who fleeced me earlier this year!) as well and see what they say but I always appreciate your advice. I read through earlier threads concerning coolant levels but didn't see anything specific to my question.
I also plan to go back out and open up the hood but wanted to wait for the car to cool down first, just in case. I do not plan to touch any hoses, etc. - just visual inspection.
thanks in advance,
sharon
ps-did all of the 60K service plus serpentine / pulley replacement a few months ago.
