When you open the hood and you are standing at the front of the car, the coolant reservoir is on your right - white, translucent tank with a yellow cap. There is a seam in the middle of the tank and the coolant level should be just above the seam, there is a line labeled KALT which I think means coolant level when cold. If your level is anywhere around the middle then you might not have a big problem. Just add some distilled water (AFTER THE ENGINE BAY HAS COOLED DOWN) to bring the level to KALT.
Also, if you're smelling things, look around the radiator area and also immediately below on the ground to see if there is a leak. I just had my radiator replaced two days ago: 220,000 miles on a 2001 9-5. Yours has fewer miles but your radiator still could be going bad because of age (it is a plastic radiator tank).
Of course, there are several other areas where coolant could be leaking.
Finally, if you recently parked on a severe incline (sideways or front/back) this will trigger a low coolant message that can be ignored if you visually check the tank level and it is proper.
