With the short belt, you can see the tensioner vibrating a lot. As the center idler eliminates that; I suspect that the short belt's upper length of belt was in resonance with a varying load such as the power steering pump.
I put a 1/2" steel bar in the tensioner with the engine idling with the short belt. I was looking to see if I could hold it steady and reduce the vibrations. That was not possible.
