Well I tip my hat to those who have managed to remove this thing either with the bracket attached, or by leaving the bracket on and taking it out by itself. It does seem quite impossible to physically maneuver it out with the bracket attached, and equally impossible to remove the 4 nuts attaching it to the bracket while it's in place.
So I did a hybrid approach. Once I took the clip off and disconnected it from the brake pedal linkage, I was able to move it around enough to remove the 4 nuts, thus allowing me to remove the bracket and booster individually.
Attached the linkage to the new booster (thanks for the tip to measure the length), then put them both back in and reattached. And that brings me to my latest maddening problem:
One of the three bolts which mounts the bracket to the frame will not go in, the one to the driver's side. Turn and turn but the bolt just won't get started in the threads. The top and passenger side lower bolts go right in. I tried two bolts but they just won't start. Used a thread cleaner to verify the bolts are OK.
I'm this close to just putting a few cable ties in there and calling it quits but I realize that's probably not too smart. Second thought is to get a slightly smaller diameter bolt and lock nut and secure it that way. Gonna go out and fool around with it a bit more before calling it quits for the day.
