It's finished (well except for putting the wipers back on and securing the interior panel by the pedals).
I ended up going out for a thread tap, used it to fix the bad threads on the bracket (while in place, I'd be damned if I was gonna take it out again), and then reattached. Everything else went back together quickly without too much trouble. The fabric line from the brake fluid reservoir, which I think is for the clutch, did pop of while putting the master cylinder back in place but I got it back on before much spilled out.
The brakes work, the hissing is gone, and I got the length right so the pedal engages the brake light switch correctly.
Certainly the most challenging DIY job I've done on the car. Not sure there's even a close 2nd. I'll try in the next couple of days to put a thread of tips together.
