I agree with Anders. It depends who gave you that advice and why. If you aren't taking it to a Saab indy, you should!
The odometer is the strangest item... how do you know the car has 90k on it if the odometer is not working? that is not a reason to dump a car imho...
but a bad hg is some work (if it actually has a bad hg). Nothing insurmountable, but takes a little time, and hence will cost more than more simple repairs. For someone who does their own repairs, it's not terribly costly at all if the rest of the car is well maintained. The fact that it runs well until it overheats suggests the hg is probably not that bad... damage should be minimal if it is any more than simple issues with the cooling system... when was the last time you changed the thermostat?
So, if you're really done with the car, in addition to your mechanic's other suggestions, I'd consider selling it cheaply on CL or the classifieds here. A Saab fan may DIY it back into service and you'll probably get more $$ for it than from a pick-n-pull. You can still donate that money to charity. Just a bit more effort, but may keep a saab on the road.
