I've had three 9-5's, a 2000 Aero, a 2004 ARC and a 2007 Aero.
Issues not mentioned/covered.
Fuel pump: Yes it has been mentioned as possibly being near the end of its' life. This can be measured. Using an oscilloscope or scope meter and a current clamp the waveform generated by the current flow to the pump can be observed. As the brushes and commutator in the pump motor wear the drop and duration of current flow as the brushes move between commutator segments increases. When the drop in current flow moves to zero and the duration of that drop increases the point at which the pump will stop turning is approached. Once the pump stops fuel pressure drops to zero and the car stops.
To run this you could ask a SAAB tech to run this test; many do not know how. An electronics Tech will understand the test based upon the above description.
I live in South Brunswick, NJ; if you're nearby, I'd be glad to help.
Alternator: I've had SAAB's for a long time. I have always replaced the alternator brushes at the 100K-120K mile interval. At this point they're 60%-70% worn down. On the 9-5 the brushes are an integral part of the voltage regulator assy.....available from Europarts for $97.75. This is the only alternator maintenance that has ever been done on my 2000 9-5 Aero which now has more than 400K miles on the odometer.
