Pretty much anything after 2004 is a safe bet for a 9-5 as long as it's been maintained.
The manual transmission has always been a bit rubbery and vague, and the electronic throttle holds revs between shifts, which makes it a little extra weird too. The automatic has always been a high-point on the 9-5 though. It always seems to know its place, shifts very smoothly, and is ultra-reliable (it's a Japanese transmission used in Toyotas and Lexus'). That said, I'd still trade my auto 9-5 for a manual, just because it's more fun to shift my own gears.
