I use the UK spelling but for yanks who are puzzled tyre = tire.... I'm actually an Aussie living in UK.
I don't do a lot of snow and ice, more for the cold weather performance and the occaisional snow and ice, with the odd trip into Europe for skiing. It sure has done me well the last two winters in UK when most could not get their cars on to the road (they don't use winter tyres here-amazing!!), I guess Saabs are made for it!!
Certainly the larger 215/55/16 would be better except in deep snow (don't do that), where the thinner tyre may be better.
I don't why I didn't think of it before, but a few minutes in a spreadsheet gave me the table below, I wondered why the 205s looked big in the wheel arch! Certainly the GPS (tomtom) road speed was an exact match for the 205s on the car speedo where the 225/45/17s at 60mph gps has the car speedo on 56/57.
A B C D E
2 Width aspect rim diameter mm Circ mm Circ feet n inches
3 205 60 16 652.4 2050 6' 8.5"
4 215 55 16 642.9 2020 6' 7.5"
5 225 45 17 634.3 1993 6' 6.5"
6 235 45 17 643.3 2021 6' 7.5"
Formula in excel for the diameter is: =(D5*25.4)+((B5*(C5/100))*2)
Bottom line is larger circumference equals easier fuel consumption and probably more miles to the tyre. I don't think the performance has been affected by much, it is a bit hard to tell with 300bhp trying to rip the road up!!
I will think about the next set of summer tyres being 235s.
Currently running Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 - BRILLIANT!
