The manual for my 04 says to pull to the side of the road when the transmission light comes on when towing and stop until it cools off. Then return on your way.
Steve G tows allot with his automatic 9-5 and might be able to shed some light. I recently towed my Saturn Sky convertible with manual transmission and the rear wheels down for 2 hours and it drove fine afterwards. I'm thinking that the trans fluid just needs to collect to the rear of the trans for lubrication. I did tow an 04 from Missouri to OH with the front wheels down, bumper off. But towing my 04 Arc wagon from GA back, through the hills of TN and KY in 90F degree heat was getting a work out on one hill/mountain I was able to holding 65 mph and that was it. I did have to down shift the 5-speed to 4th gear almost a dozen times coming back from MA through PA mountains pulling anoth 9-5.
