Towed 9-3SCV plenty - 3600# plus 500# dolly plus car packed to the gills.
Saab a/t logic tries to keep the transmission in lockup when it thinks it's towing, after it decides that the car isn't accelerating as much as it should given the power being generated. I find it helped both keeping the transmission in 5th and the engine temperature down to keep the speed up - below 2200 rpm it likes to shift down. Perhaps with a newer car in manual mode you could keep it in top gear longer. Speeding up on downhills and holding the boost right at the orange-green border (or was it orange-red border?) would usually get me to the top without downshifting - once the trans did downshift I would pull back the lever to "4" until the top of the hill.
As always, the biggest issue with towing isn't the pulling, it's the stopping. I fit my tow dolly with brakes, which made it manageable.
As for you, Roger, towing an MGA with a 9-5 is duck soup. I suspect the total weight will be under 2200 lbs, dolly included, or about half of what I did.
