at my 9-5 ... well I've looked "at" it, but never critically ... but ...
Traditionally Saab uses a "staked" axle nut. That is, there is a slot milled in the stub axle threads and the nut has a collar that is knocked down with a center punch into the slot after being torqued. No way does it come loose after. I can't say that the 9-5 continues the tradition, and even if they do, the replacement axle may not have been "genuine Saab" and had the slot, let alone the "new nut" having a locking collar.
Usually one specs the torque on a nut or bolt to ensure it neither comes loose nor breaks. But axle nuts are often spec'd according to the required bearing preload, and hence the need to stake or otherwise secure the nut.
