My original bypass valve was replaced at 120k. It wasn't leaking or anything just replaced it to be safe. Its a generic GM part used on Cadillac's and Saturns. I think I paid like $30 for it. With a set of hose clamp cable pliers I replaced mine in 15-20 mins. Was really easy.
On my car I can tell the difference in the a/c when the valve is closed. When I set the ACC to lo there is a big difference in the a/c from what I imagine the valve closing. It cuts off 200 degree coolant from the ACC box and allows for much colder vent temps.
Just dont understand the big issue with them. I could keep one in my trunk with the hose clamp pliers and change it in no time on the side of the road.
