The only way to scientifically prove if A/C is better with or without is to manually apply vacuum to the valve during a steady setting of temperature and a long drive so that the temp inside the car is stable.
Since the ACC system apply vacuum to that valve based on different criteria, you don't know exactly when it is open or not.
Dialing down to Lo compared to 58° can be a big difference all depending on outside/inside temperature and may have nothing to do with the bypass valve itself.
Another aspect in this whole scenario is also that at some point the upper heater hose WILL rupture up at the cylinder head connection.
That is the normal place where all these hoses break and have been breaking there since the introduction of the 16 valve engine in 84.
So after a couple of bypass valve replacements, you are going to be due for that piece of heater hose as well.
Removing the whole shebang and installing the normal heater hoses takes care of two looming problems at the same time.
And keep in mind that the OG9-3 is doing just fine with its A/C system without having that bypass valve from factory. And the new 9-3 is also doing just fine without it.
This bypass valve is a prime example where the white coat labrats had to come up with something to make them self important. It doesn't mean it is a good idea but it kept a few people occupied for awhile and made the industry happy by having to make special hoses and valve that cost a lot of money.
$479.40 is the retail price of the hose/valve setup, P/N 5048830, not counting the vacuum solenoid and wire harness and such that it took to implement that idea.
