If you are dead set on a 9-5, Buy a car where someone has already done this if you are looking at Aeros. Proper fixes would be quality shock replacements, new springs, new rubber or poly bushings all over, not just throwing spacer on worn out shocks and springs. The rear suspension is especially junk, it appears the whole design was bogus from the get go and GM never fixed it on the 9-5. If not fixed will slam, creak and bang over everything, eat up tires and cause the car to handle like there is a hinge in the middle. Aeros and wagons are especially plauged with this.
So there may be no good year for the 9-5. Mine is 04 Aero sedan, and I hate the way this car rides and handles. I liked my 00 9-3 SE much better, I had poly bushings all over that car, swaybars, strutbars and rack brace and clamp. And it did not beat me to death. Wifes 2010 Volvo S80 is a much more pleasant car with a smoother motor and better matched 6spd auto tranny. Gas mileage is even better than my Saab and it doesn't shake like a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower like my 2.3 Aero does.
There are a lot of decent cars out there now, why go out of your way to buy one that is hard to get parts for? This is hard for me to say after 7 Saabs, but it is true.
