Thanks for the replies guys. I was really hoping not to have to pull all that stuff off twice, once to test and once to replace whatever but alas that appears to be the way then. I can't see doing the brush replacement for the minimal returns. This car's got too much life yet.
On further assessment it seems like there isn't a slowdown after a couple minutes as I stated earlier. It's just not running at full ever. Starting the car cold with the temps set to "LO", the sound is loud but in reality it's just not blowing that hard from the beginning. What I perceived to be slowing down was just me opening the other vents and turning off recirculate.
BTW, two other things: there's a couple pretty good videos found by Goggling and eEuroparts shows the fan for US$185, much less than the $300 I'd seen talked about.
