If he warrantees the job you should be getting this for free. And he should be offering up a better alternator. Good mechanics will usually do the work at no charge if a warrantied part fails. The good techs use parts that won't result in a comeback. Sometimes it pays to buy an OEM part.
FWIW, I put a reman from AutoZone on my '96 9K over 3 years ago. 40K miles later it's still doing the job. And I think it cost about $100 plus returning the core.
Right now, a reman Bosch alternator is $198 from eEuroparts.
Also, be sure that it's the alternator that's failing.
