How to get fuel pump through inspection hole?

Hi,
Is there a special trick to lift out the fuel pump body, through the inspection hole under the rear seat?
I fail to see how it got in there in the first place. The hole is round, as is the pump body, with millimeters to spare. But there is a stiff fuel line going from the top flange down alongside the pump body. The sender unit protrudes as well. See picture.
The Haynes manual simply states: rotate a quarter turn and lift out. Yeah, right. Should I drop the tank? But there are no other bigger holes, are there?
It's especially frustating as I'm having fuel gauge troubles and I could actually *see* big yellow pieces fouling the sender float (the baffles??) But I can't get to it.
Mine's a 2007 wagon. Hope someone can help.
Cheers all,
Ferenc
