I repaired mine when I discovered one of my reverse lights wasn't operating. I also broke the plastic elbow because I rotated it instead of twisting it (subtle difference in semantics, dramatic difference in results). Opening and closing the trunk became a two-handed operation- had to hold the elbow in place.
That lasted about 6 months before my license plate bulbs stopped working (I cut in and lengthened all the wires, not just the damaged ones). I bought a used harness off ebay for around $50, problem solved (no soldering needed).
I think the mistake I made was having the repaired splices located inside the tube by the hinge instead of cutting back towards the fender. If this one dies too, I'll either buy another used one or splice in about 5 feet of wire and use crimp connectors inside the trunk lid and inside the fenderwall. it's too much of a PITA to solder and get uncertain results- especially with that many wires. I may buy another used one just to keep handy as a spare so it can be swapped out in a few minutes.
